Jobs for Felons using the Federal Bonding Program
I am 48 years old, female from Illinois. I have one felony in 1991 of second degree murder of my abusive husband. Since then I have had 2 speeding tickets. I worked at a domestic violence agency for 15 years. In 2007 6 of us was let go, everyone that had been there over 10 years. Since then I have found it very hard to get work. When I fill out a application that asks if you have ever had a felony I never hear back from them. I can’t get a job at a Bank or Hospital and many other places. I even tried to get a job at a casino, they said no because I cant be bonded. Not sure what to do, losing hope. Please give me some tips!!
Thank You,
Sandy
Jobs for Felons using the Federal Bonding Program
Hello Sandy,
I have had several students that have had murder/manslaughter convictions. Contrary to what many believe, those are not the worse convictions to have. In fact people with theft convictions are harder to place. The thinking is that people who kill generally only kill once and those are isolated incidents. Those who steal do so because they are thieves. Don’t let your being a felon stop you from going after what you want.
As far as being bonded, there is great news for a felon looking for jobs. A bond is an insurance policy that protects an employer against loss of money or property due to employee dishonesty. Certain criminal convictions make many felons ineligible for bonding by private insurance companies. A felon, including anyone with a record of arrest, conviction or imprisonment, and anyone who has ever been on probation or parole, are considered “high risk” job applicants.
The Federal Bonding Program is program sponsored by the Department of Labor. This program was created to assist high-risk, but qualified, job seekers who have offers of employment.
These bonds are free of charge to both the applicant and the employer and can be issued for any job at any employer in any state, and covers any employee dishonesty.
An applicant can be bonded the same day the job offer is made. You can also get information here:

Either you or your employer can apply for the federal bond.
Take the completed form to your local One-stop Career Center. Ask for the person that handles requests for Federal Bonding. That person will be able to explain the bonding process in further detail.
