Felon helps himself while looking for a job

Felon helps himself while looking for a job – A felon should not wait for as job to come along. There are a lot of things that ex-offenders and felons can do until they get the jobs that they want.

I have been answering questions on this blog for a while now. Most of the advice I give to felons comes out of my own experience helping people with criminal records. Many of the people I have worked with stay in contact me and I often hear of the progress they have made. I am gratified to know that what they learned from me has helped them on their way.

Recently a young man I had previously worked with told me he had started a business with a few others felons he met. They all were finding it difficult to find jobs.

To make a long story short, they started a moving company. They first started by putting up flyers at the local supermarket and did a lot of word-of-mouth advertising. There are professional moving companies, but they are able to compete on price and availability. They charge less than larger professional moving companies and they are available anytime. They have a list of other felons they call on an as-need-basis. They get referrals from rental companies, real estate agents and the local housing authority.

They have contracts with local housing developments to move furniture out of apartment when tenants are evicted.  They started with just two guys, now they employ over twenty, most of them former felons.

Other ex-offenders have started cleaning companies, do interior and exterior painting and even do window washing for stores and private homes.  They hang decorations and lights at holiday time and take them down when the season is over.  They have both residential and business customers.

They are still looking for jobs but they have proven that a felon can earn a living while also helping others. With a little creativity and hard work ex-offenders and felons may even find lucrative alternatives to traditional jobs.
