FELON WANTS TO JOB IN MEDICAL INDUSTRY

Q: Hi my name is Tee. I have a situation I am a felon (forgery) on my background. I got this back in April 2006. Since then I have not had a job. That’s the only thing on my back ground never been in any other trouble but that time. I have my Pharmacy Technician License, Medical Administrative Assistant Certification, Nursing Assistant Certification which I have to renew but I’m thinking renewing my Nursing Assistant would be a waste of time because everything else is in good standard and can’t get hired.

I’m not giving up but it is hard. I get interviews for job position. It’s just when they do background check they said I’m not a good candidate for the position or I don’t meet the standard in what they are looking for. S o my question to you is there jobs out there that would hire me or where do I began to look for these type of jobs that I’m qualified for and is it a program that I might how to go through.

A: Hello Tee,

There are not many ways to get around a background check. First of all, with your certifications in the medical field, I would check to see if your conviction affected any of them. The medical board in your state should have this information. If they were not affected, you may still be hired in your field.

The situation I believe you are running into is your conviction itself. Forgery is a crime of integrity. When a conviction like this one appears on a background check, one may consider that you are dishonest and can not be trusted.

One option for employment is temporary placement agencies. There are temporary agencies that cater to the medical industry. The key for a felon applying to temp agencies is to apply to smaller, individually owned agencies. Often the larger placement companies have strict policies that forbid the hiring of ex-offenders and felons. Independent agencies are free to hire whomever they feel will be good employees. Many temporary employees are hire as permanent if they do a good job. Remember, always be honest when applying for jobs.

One suggestion I offer to every ex-offender and felon looking for jobs is to use the local One-stop Career center, once called the “employment office.” There you find a list of open positions in your area. You can find your local office here:

Where can a felon find jobs?

Remind any employer that you can be bonded by the Federal Bonding Program. You can get more information on the federal bonding program here:

I hope this helps.
