Female felon looking for job search help

Jobs for Felons

Hello,

My name is Crystal and I an a felon convicted on July 27, 2021 for involuntary manslaughter.   I was the passenger in the car and the driver hit a pedestrian on a bike and unfortunately the pedestrian didn’t make it.

I was given probation and didn’t do any jail time.  I was able to maintain my job the whole time during all that and a month after I was convicted my job let me go do to me being convicted.   They were well aware of everything from day one but anyways my question is, where can I look for work?

I have applied everywhere and I know its not going to be easy but I was hoping that maybe I could get a few suggestions from you at this point.  Anything will help.

Thank you

A: Hello Crystal,

If this is any consolation, of all of the cases I deal with, Manslaughter is one of the most forgiving of felonies.

My first suggestion is, when completing applications, always list your conviction as “Involuntary Vehicular Manslaughter.”  That will probably eliminate any further questions because it is pretty self-explanatory.  It also implies that there was no criminal intent involved.

My next suggestion is one I make to all ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs is to go to your nearest One-stop Career Center.

One-stop Career Centers are very underutilized resources that ex-offenders and felons can use not only to get jobs, but to get career counseling and training. In addition, these centers provide a long list of valuable services. Some services available are:

Career planning and counseling

Workshops (Resume Writing, Interviewing Skills, and related topics.)

Computers with internet access and word processing

Daily access to thousands of job listings

Job-related magazines and local newspapers

Job postings and referrals

Printers, fax machines, phones, and copiers for job search use

Each center has trained counselors that provide one-on-one assistance. Many of them have experience assisting ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs.

As stated in a previous post, you can find your nearest center here:

You may also want to look into expungementExpungement basically is  a court order effectively sealing a court proceeding of a case and its affects from public view. This would appear that your conviction does not exist. It does, but will only be visible to the court system, law enforcement and government agencies.

Many ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs seek legal counsel before the can start an effective job search just to see how their records will impact their ability to get jobs. I suggest contacting your local legal aid office to see just how viable an option expungement is for you.

I hope this helps.
