RECOVERING ADDICT AND FELON NEEDS A JOB

Q: Dear Sir.

Recovering addict and felon needs a job – I am a recovering Addict and I am a few months away from my bachelor degree in Substance Abuse. What do you suggest I do? I also have several non-violent felonies due to my addiction back in the day. I live in Oklahoma now and my cases all happened in the year 2012.

I am assuming that you want to be a Substance Abuse Counselor. Who better to advise someone about recovery than a recovering addict? Great aspiration.

My first suggestion is to contact your local United Way. The United Way supports a wide range of social services may of which help ex-offenders, felons and people battling substance abuse. I’m sure they can direct you to agencies that work with people with addiction. You may find volunteer opportunities that would provide valuable experience until you degree is finished. They may also put you in contact with other organizations that assist ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs.

Due to the current opioid epidemic, rehab facilities are popping up all over. Many of these facilities employ peer mentors to help patients through the recovery process. You can contact facilities in your area and inquire if any mentor opportunities are available. If you are fortunate enough to get a job in a facility, you will meet professionals who can give you advice on advancing your career.

As a felon, you may want to get legal advice before starting a job search plan. You may get low-cost or even no-cost legal advice at your local legal aid office. You can find your local legal aid office as well as your local United Way office in you telephone directory.
