Sister of Felon wants to Help Him get a Job

Sister of Felon wants to Help Him get a Job

Hi,

I am writing on behalf of my brother who has just been released from prison after spending 25 years behind bars. When he was just a teen he was involved in a crime. Even though he did not commit the murder, but because he was with the person who did my brother got 25 to life. I was wondering where should he start looking for work we are in Fairfield, Ca. During his time in prison he has gotten several bachelor degrees and to my amazement is very smart. Microsoft office knowledge, and can type 85 words per min.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks,

Mrs Dawson

Hello,

It’s great that you want to help your brother. He is going to need all the help he can get re-adjusting to society after 25 years.

He is better off than many ex-offenders and felons I work with. Firstly, he has marketable skills that are in demand. Secondly, murder is not the worse conviction he could have. It may seem odd, but it is my experience that employers tend to look at other convictions such as robbery, theft and similar crimes more harshly than murder and or manslaughter.

My first suggestion is that he try temporary agencies. He has office skills that can be marketed easily. I, myself have worked at temporary office assignments. He should apply at temporary agencies just as he would apply at any other job. Because of his specialized skills, he will probably be tested for proficiency on several computer programs. Temporary agencies are often looking for clerical help because the demand is usually high. Often companies end up hiring their temporary help if they prove to be good employees. There is a twist for a felon when it comes to applying for temporary employment. They should apply at smaller independent . Independent agencies don’t have to deal with restrictions larger agencies may have placed on them by their parent companies as they relate to hiring ex-offenders and felons. They are free to hire anyone they choose. If they feel your brother will be a good employee, they are free to hire him if they so choose.

You can find listing in your local telephone directory and apply as you would any other job.

My next suggestion is one I make to each and every ex-offender and felon I meet who is looking for a job, make a visit to the local One-stop Career Center. This is a really underutilized resource that are in each and every community in the country. Each state has a network of centers that provide many free services that can help citizens get jobs. Some services available are:

Career planning and counseling

Workshops (Resume Writing, Interviewing Skills, and related topics.)

Computers with internet access and word processing

Daily access to thousands of job listings

Job-related magazines and local newspapers

Job postings and referrals

Printers, fax machines, phones, and copiers for job search use

Each center has trained counselors that provide one-on-one assistance. Many of them have experience assisting ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs.

The center in your area is:

320 Campus Lane
Fairfield, CA 94534
