Felons have options looking for jobs

Felons have options looking for jobsQ: Hello there,

I was reading over your blog and I think Its great. Its one of the only resources I’ve come across that offers any real advice, So I am hoping
that you can help me with some.

I am a 29 year old female and have always worked retail management and some minor office positions.  I was charged with theft from a previous employer as a result of filing for unemployment. Including myself there were 3 of us that worked at this location that were let go all on alleged grounds of some sort of theft and no charges were brought against the other 2 employees who did not file for unemployment.  My previous employer even told my lawyer that he would have never filed the charges if I had not filed for unemployment. I was to afraid to proceed with the jury trial based on my lawyers last second statement that the court we were at had an 80-90% conviction rate. So as a result I took a deal which resulted in one years probation. I’ve never had any previous arrests, spent time in jail or have ever been fired from a job for any sort of misconduct or criminal behavior other then that one employer. This all happened in 2009.

I was able to get a job at a former employer right after I left there but due to the economy I was eventually laid off. Since then I have had lots of interviews and even job offers but as soon as they run a background check they take the offer back. In some cases I have even straight out told them before hand about what all was going on and when they ran the background it comes back saying something like,  I’m ok by the background check place’s standards and Its up to the management. I have asked my probation officer many times to contact me with any advice he can give but I have not heard from him or been able to catch him since our very first meeting. I’ve applied for everything from jobs In my field of expertise to the food service industry.

My probation ends this September, But I don’t think it’s going to make that much of a difference. I feel like I’m untouchable because of the nature of the charge. I’ve even looked up companies that hire people with a record and was turned down there. I feel like I would have been better off If I had served time because I see there are programs for people on actual parole to help them get their lives back In order but nothing for anyone who falls In the same boat as me.

I live In MD and was wondering If you had any advice or information you could share with me that could maybe get me pointed In the right direction for some real assistance because all the applications I’ve filled out and resumes I’ve sent out are not turning into anything real. I’d like to move on with my life and work like the rest of the world and I just can’t seem to get someone to take a chance.  I’m a hard worker and I hate not having a job.  I don’t know what to do with myself and I am tired of being a burden to my loved ones.  I just want to stand on my own two feet again. Any thoughts??

Thanks for taking the time to read this.
Sincerely,

Super frustrated In Maryland.

Felons have options looking for jobs

A: Hello Frustrated,

My first suggestion is to not apply for any positions where money or valuables are at risk.  It is my belief when any employer sees the the theft conviction, there is no chance.  You should consider a different line of work.  As I suggest to all ex -offenders and felons looking for work is to go to the local One-stop Career Center.  There you will find resources that can help you find a job or get and training that can possibly turn into a new career.  You can find the center nearest you at:

https://servicelocator.org

My second suggestion is to apply for temporary employment.  Temporary jobs are a great way for ex-offenders and felons to quickly get back into the working world.  Applying for employment for felons is a bit different than other job seekers.  Ex-offenders and felons stand a better chance at getting hired by applying smaller independent agencies rather than lager national companies.  Larger companies tend to have more restrictions handed down buy parent companies.  Independent companies can hire anyone they choose.  Usually if an employer sees that you are hardworking you may be offered a job on a permanent basis.  Get your local phone directory and find local temp agencies in your area.

There are also companies that have made a public pledge to have fair hiring practices when it comes to employing and training ex-offenders and felons.  You can find more about this pledge and the companies here.  Jobs for Felons: Companies Pledge Second Chance Opportunities

I hope this helps.
