Felon may have to Change Careers

In 2011 I was convicted of attempting to cash a fraud check , placed on probation was doing everything required then in 2014 my boyfriend at the time sends me go return a watch at a Coach store says they’ll issue gift card w/out receipt. Long story short, it was stolen I ended up arrested for what they called it “Theft trying obtain cash under false pretenses.”

Revoked on probation sentenced to 1 year NDOC as per my suspended sentenced when placed on probation. Been 4 years since being released, have had jobs. One shut down, the other was given no choice but to quit by my boyfriend, using his vehicle delivering newspapers. He was pulling car. NOW again trying find employment. I’m open and honest about my back ground still. it’s hindering me trying get employment.

I’ve done re-entry program, was told no employer is going to hire me due to my conviction for customer service. I was told I could either take up culinary or warehouse training. I chose warehouse received certificate and forklift license. I’ve applied warehouses majority requires 3-6 month experience in warehouse. My passion is customer service having over 10 years experience.

How do I discuss details of my last conviction which led to my revocation on probation? The employers ask me, I’m open and honest but still I don’t get hired. They say it’s from date of conviction. I don’t need to discuss or disclose but if I say no and background reveals different then I appear lying. I reveal it but then am told thanks for my honesty currently they’re no longer hiring or they’ll get back with me just to be told I didn’t get the job.

I cashed fake pay roll checks I admit my actions own up to it it doesn’t have to do with identity theft etc. As my counselor had stated despite not having convictions of any sort pertaining identity theft, still employers aren’t going to hire me for sole purpose cashing fraud check. I am reluctant to believe such.. I state yes I have a felony due to ….. placed on probation till catching a case which video tapes revealed. I didn’t steal the watch yet still cause I tried getting gift card it was considered theft trying to obtain cash under false pretenses..I keep it short (unlike here in this e-mail) still. Help please.

Sincerely,

Carrie

Hello Carrie,

I’m sorry you are having so much trouble.  I have had students that have had theft and similar charges and want certain types of jobs.  Unfortunately, having theft, fraud or other kinds of integrity convictions will most likely keep them from getting jobs where anything of value will be at risk.  Customer service may be one of those jobs.  In most cases, customer service representatives have access to customer information.  It’s highly unlikely that you will be considered for that type of job.

Your counselor was right in suggesting that you try other options when choosing a career.  I encourage ex-offenders and felons to get a current copy of their criminal records to see exactly what comes up.  Your probation or parole officer can probably get you a updated copy of your record.  This will help you decide which careers may offer the most potential.

There are companies that hire felons.  Even though they hire felons, they will take into account the applicants’ convictions.  Our page has a huge list of companies that hire felons. Read More

Take a look at the video below.  It will give you an idea of what convictions are more difficult to work with than others.

Good luck to you.
