Ex-offenders Applying for Jobs Online

Jobs for Ex-offenders

Many companies offer job seekers the opportunity to apply for employment online and it a good way for employers to receive large amounts of applicants to choose from. I have been helping ex-offenders and felons get jobs for many years and it is my experience that very few get jobs this way. In my experience there are situations which offer ex-offenders and felons opportunities. Large retail outlets (Target, Wal-Mart, K-Mart) and supermarkets often have what is know as application kiosks which are on-site computer terminals that applicants can use to apply for jobs right in the store.

I teach my students that there is a great method to getting these jobs. First, make sure you have a personal data sheet. This is a list of the information that is commonly asked on applications. Personal data sheets will keep you from having to remember all of the names, dates, etc. This information will include:

Names, dates, addresses, phone numbers, job descriptions and supervisors of previous previous employers

Any training you have had

Next, get the telephone book and call retail stores and supermarkets to find out what their application process is. If they accept written application form walk-ins, go to the store and apply. If they accept online applications only, find out if they have a kiosk on site. Your best chance, are the stores with kiosks.

If written applications are accepted or there is an in-store kiosk, you should dress as you were going to an interview. Remember first impressions are powerful. Once you get to the store, find out if there is someone there that can help you in case you get stuck. That person more often than not has something to do with the hiring process. Be especially nice and friendly to that person. Once your application is complete, speak to that person again. Whichever job you have applied for, tell that person that you are very interested in that job and you would like to know if there is anything else you can do to increase your chances of getting an interview. Remember first impressions. You are friendly and you look nice. You would be surprised of the responses you will get. Often my students, based on their appearance, are interviewed on the spot.
