MEDICAL JOBS FOR A FELONQ: Hi,

My name is Kelly, and I have a felony charge on my record for forgery.  I am recently attending an online college to become a pharmacy tech, and/or certified medical administration assistant.  I am living in Alaska at the present time, although next year when I plan on taking the exams, I will be living in Corpus Christie, Texas.  I was wondering, if there is anything I need to know about being a felon and trying to change my life for the better.  I never expected to have to only be able to apply at McDonald’s for the rest of my life.

PLZ HELP!!!

A: Hello Kelly,

I’m glad you have not let being a felon stop you from wanting an education and a career.  One thing you must consider, your conviction may keep you from being licensed.  If you are indeed moving  to Texas, you should try contacting the Texas State Board of Pharmacy to see if you can be certified.  I believe the granting of license to felons is on a case by case basis.  There is a “Question and Answer” on eligibility to be licensed with a criminal record here:

Q&A ON LICENSURE/REGISTRATION

In regard to becoming a Certified Medical Administration Assistant, you probably already know that there are three certifying bodies for medical assistants: the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), the American Medical Technologists (AMT) and the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).   To my knowledge being a felon will not affect the certification process for either of them.  The decision to hire you would totally be up to the office you were applying to.  Put together a nice resume and practice your interviewing skills.

If your conviction comes up, you can tell an prospective employer that you can be bonded upon hire.  You can get more info on the Federal Bonding Program here:

Once you get to Corpus Christie, get some help finding employment from the local One-stop Career Center.  You can get job search assistance, help putting a resume together, and lists of open positions in that area.

If you cannot find a job right away, consider working as a temporary employment.  Many permanent position are filled by people who started as temp employees.  Check you local telephone directory for  temporary agencies to apply to.  There are even agencies that specialize in the medical profession.  Apply just as you would any other job.

I hope this helps
