Q: If I applied for a fire department and they do a background check but my record is sealed, will that record show up? I currently live in California.
What kind of successful careers can I obtain with a sealed juvenile record? It seems as if all high end jobs like in the medical field, police departments, fire departments, etc. all ask for background checks. If my record is sealed, should I be worried?

A: First of all I encourage every ex-offender to apply for every job they feel they are qualified for. Don’t miss out on a great opportunity by talking yourself out of it. Don’t believe just because you are an ex-offender, you have not chance at good jobs. Ex-offenders and felons are hired everyday.
As for your juvenile record being sealed, as most are, they will always be visible to the court system, law enforcement and government agencies. That is why I suggest you go for any job you want. If and when you get an interview, you should be prepared to explain your past legal troubles in a positive way.
I recently had a young man with a juvenile criminal record enlist in the Army. He thought that because he was an ex-offender the Army wouldn’t take him. He spoke to a recruiter and his conviction was not held against him. Now he has the opportunity to learn a trade, have a profession and a possible career.
