Hello Mr. Mayo,
I found your blog online and hope you can help me at least with some information about expungement. When I was a bit younger, I got into some trouble and now it’s haunting me. I can’t get a job anywhere. I have had interviews but nobody has called me back. I think it’s because of my record. A friend of mine told me about expungement to get rid of my charges. I called a few lawyers that advertise that they can I clear my record for x amount of money. Can my charges be cleared?

I am not an attorney and do not take this as legal advice but, my understanding is that certain convictions can be set aside. After being set aside, they will no longer be listed as convictions. The charges will remain. Most employers do not care about charges and very few applications will ask for them. Applications generally ask about convictions. Many people believe that expungement will totally erase convictions. It will not. Convictions will always be visible to the court system, law enforcement and government agencies. There are restrictions to which situations qualify for expungement. They are listed in the guide. There is also information on how to apply. Because this is a legal process, you should not try to do it alone. Many ex-offenders and felons need legal assistance to make job searching easier. You should seek assistance from a qualified legal professional.
Lawyers are going to hate me for this because expungement in California is big business and they make a lot of money from this but,you can get low cost or even no-cost help applying. Contact the California Bar Association for information on free legal assistance and where to find it.
In the meantime, as I suggest to all ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs, go to your local One-stop Career Center. There you will find valuable resources that can help you get a job. You will find assistance putting a resume together and other job search preparation. You will find lists of open jobs in your area. You may also find opportunities for career training that could lead to a new career.
