Felon may need help before a job

Felon may need help before a job

Proposed academy pushing for ex-offenders to get opportunities at port and related businesses

My name is Charlotte and I have a 22 year old nephew who will be released from jail in April.

He is the father of a 4 month old little girl.  He was just given a chance of a lifetime as he was going to receive 18 months in prison, but the judge gave him another chance.   I love the name of your email “Believe” publications because the judge looked at us and asked us do we believe in him!  I stood up and spoke on his behalf and told the judge why I believe in him.  The judge took that into consideration and gave him another chance.

I am writing you because I saw your book on line after searching for solutions to help him.  His father walked out on his mom when he was a little boy and he has gotten caught up with the wrong crowd and has been in and out of trouble ever since he was a pre-teen.  He also never finished school.  His mom tried with job core and salvation army programs, but he didn’t make it with either program…because he has a temper and something was always going wrong.

The good news is after visiting him the other day, he says he wants a job and he wants to take care of his daughter when he gets out. He has no place to stay when he gets out because he has burned his bridges with all of the places that he could’ve stayed.  He told me he was going to stay with his homies, which concerns me because these are the same homies that he keeps getting in trouble with.   I just want to do whatever I can to give him the knowledge to change.

He said he is done with programs, but along with your book, I think he needs emotional help to deal because my concern is if he doesn’t learn to manage his anger, he will react on the job that he would have fought so hard to get.

Do you have any books or programs to offer help with anger management.  He lives in the Somerset county area.  He said he would think about it if I found something that would help him, although he doesn’t think he has a problem.

At the end of the day, I know he needs to take responsibility for himself. He blame shifts a lot and I think he is in denial, but I thought it was worth it to ask you if you had any tools that might help.   You can just email me back at this email address.

I am sorry for such a long email, but I am sure you can understand.

Its so great to see the impact you have had on thousands and I am hoping you can help us with one more!

Take care,

Charlotte

Felon may need help before a job

Hello Charlotte,

It seems that your nephew may not yet be ready for a job.  You can do everything that you can for him, but if he’s not ready, you and he will be in for frustration and disappointment.  Often prison is time for a felon to reflect on his past and decide if he is done with incarceration or not.  If there has been no attitude adjustment, my book or no other type of help will matter.

If anger management is indeed an issue, he would be better served to get counseling by a trained professional.  I often meet ex-offenders and felons with issues that require professional help before any progress can be made.

I suggest you speak to someone at the United Way of Somerset County.  The United Way supports a number of social service agencies that could offer some assistance with housing, mental health and once those thing are in place perhaps you nephew can be referred for employment.  Perhaps a service agency can help him with getting prepared for work and help him identify felon friendly employers.
