Felon Mom in Fl. needs a Job

Felon Mom in Fl. needs a Job

  Q: Hello,

I am a single mother of 5 children. I live in Fl. I have a 2007 felony conviction for possession of cannabis because of marijuana that my children’s father left in my home. In high school, I graduated with a 4.0 GPA. Until I got this conviction I was able to gain employment at two very good employers were I remained employed for over two years.  At this moment I am facing homelessness and I can’t find anyone that will hire me. I go to the local Workforce daily and they are also unable to help me. I am becoming really depressed and lost a to what I need to do to get my life back together for me and my kids.

PLEASE HELP

A: Hello,

Please don’t give up on Workforce Florida. Just because they were not able to help you right away, doesn’t mean they won’t be able to help you in the future.  Local One-stop Career Centers are very underutilized resources.  But you have to put the services to work for you.  Don’t forget they have access to the bank of available jobs in your state plus a lot of other resources that can help you.  There are employers that hire ex felons and you may be able to find out exactly which ones do at the center.  They may also have training opportunities that could prepare you for a new career.  At every center, there are counselors that can help you with your job search.  Just because you are a felon does not mean you cannot have a career.

I strongly suggest that you contact your local United Way office. The United Way supports a number of non-profit social service organizations that provide assistance to families.  There maybe resources that could offer immediate aid.  The United way may even have contact with employers that hire ex-offenders and felons. You can find out more about the United Way of Central Florida here:

I hope this helps.
