Felon in Alabama needs Job Search Help

My name is Albert and I’m from Birmingham Al. I ‘m searching hard for a job but just can’t seem to find one.

I went to prison when I was 18 and I’m 21 now. I don’t have any work experience so it has been even harder finding a job. Please help me.

Hello Albert,

I hear from many ex felons looking for jobs and have little or no work experience. Believe it or not, this often works in their favor. Many employers are inclined to hire someone with no experience over another person claiming many years experience. The reason for this is they can train the person in their method rather than fight with many years of an employee doing it another way.

With no practical on-the-job experience, offering an employer attitude related or self-management skills may land you a job. The self-management skills most important to employers are:

Co-operative attitude

Flexibility

Hard-working

Honesty

Punctuality

Quick learner

Don’t think you have nothing to offer to an employer. If you have most of the self-management skills above, you have a good chance of getting a job, so don’t let your lack of experience stop you from applying for a job if you see one available.

I suggest to every felon I speak to make a visit to the local One-stop Career Center where you can get help putting a resume together. Job hunters should always have a resume. You can get some interviewing skills and you will also find a list of open jobs in the Birmingham area. There are also counselors who can offer one-on-one assistance with your job search. There are three centers in the Birmingham area so you can choose which is closer to you.
