Jobs for Felons: Mom of Felon wants son to get Job

My son is having a hard time because of a brainless mistake he made five years ago when he was eighteen. He was arrested and convicted of having two Xtacy tablets. That carried a felony conviction and he will have to live with that one felony on his record for the rest of his life..

I always thought that a felony were real crimes like robbery, murder, rape and similar things. But my son has never robbed anyone, never hurt anyone, has never done anything except be a teenager doing the occasional stupid thing.

I believe it’s terrible how people, especially young people can be charged with crimes and convicted of felonies. They don’t always consider consequences of what they do. The end result is they will have black marks that they will have to live with their entire lives. I hate to think my son’s future is ruined because he is labeled a felon because of a stupid mistake.

At the moment, my son is working with a friend that has a landscaping company, but he wants more opportunity. What can he do? I won’t give up on him and I hope he doesn’t give up on himself.

Jobs for Felons: Mom of Felon wants son to get Job

Hello Annie,

I get so many emails from mothers who want to help their children. There is nothing like a mother’s love. When it seems like everyone has turn their backs, mom is always there.

The one bit of advice I give to all ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs is to apply for every job they feel they are qualified to do. Never disqualify yourself from an opportunity. Let someone else do it. Never assume that having a criminal record will keep you from getting hired. There are employers out there who will give a felon a chance. Finding a job for a felon is a numbers game. The more jobs your son applies for the more interviews he will get. The more interviews he gets, the greater chance he will find an employer who will give him that chance.

Another bit advice is to always be honest about his past. If he gets a question about his background, he is to answer honestly. He should briefly explain what happened but spend more time talking about what has happened since his legal trouble. He should talk about what he has done to improve himself and how he regrets his stupid mistake and how he has not been in trouble since then.

Make sure he has a good resume and nice interview clothes for when the interviews start coming.

I encourage everybody seeking jobs to go to their local One-stop Career Center. They will find a long list of services that can help them find work. Job seekers will also find lists of available jobs in their immediate area. There are also counselors who can provide individual assistance. Often the counselors have experience serving people with criminal records and know of employers who may hire them. The counselors can also help in finding opportunities for vocational training that could lead to a new career.
